8 New Apps You Should Know

Instead of wading through the massive amount of new app releases searching for a few diamonds in the rough, just let us be your guide. This is a collection of our favorite new apps for both iOS and Android for your downloading pleasure.

Sarahah

Sarahah–which means “honesty” or “candor” in Arabic–is currently one of the most popular apps in the world as it sits pretty on top of the most downloaded app charts for both Android and iOs. Originally developed for honest workplace feedback, Sarahah allows you to receive anonymous feedback from anyone on the Internet “in a private manner.” You can control who sends you messages and favorite the ones you like, but there’s no way for you to respond. If we’re being completely honest, this app is equal parts interesting, fun, ridiculous and terrifying because it brings the comments section to your personal inbox with no fear of retribution. iOS | Android

Loopsie

If you’re not familiar with cinemagraphs, also known as magic photos, they’re a combination of still photos and moving video that are more interesting than both animated GIFs and still images because only one part of the image keeps moving. With Loopsie you can create all the cleverly animated images you want without having to worry about blurry or low definition video because of the state-of-the-art stabilization algorithm that takes all the work out of post production.iOS |Android

Placer

Hate waiting in line but still want the latest iPhone or limited Nike release? Check out Placer, the app that matches people who don’t want to wait in line (Jumpers) with people who don’t mind making a buck for their time (Placers). Right now, the app that allows you to pay others to wait in line for you or earn a buck while you’re waiting in line for someone else is only available in New York City, but the Placer app will be expanding to other locations soon.iOS |Android

Eclipse Safari

On Monday, August 21, 2017 North America will be treated to a total solar eclipse that stretches from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. With the Eclipse Safari app you can experience the magnificent splendor of this celestial phenomenon even if you’re unable to make the trek to somewhere on the path of totality. Countdown timer. Live updates. Interactive eclipse map. Eclipse live stream. This might not be an app that stay on your phone forever, but it’s worth having until after you get to witness history.iOS |Android

Linelight

If you don’t stay up-to-date on your video games you might have missed the smash hit Linelight, but that’s ok because now it’s available on both iPhone and Android. Based on the simple premise “What if everything takes place on lines?”, Linelight removes the jump, shoot and strafe buttons in favor of an experience that has you moving a tiny line of light along a series of lines through a maze with various obstacles and challenges. The minimalistic puzzler is immersive and soothing while also being challenging and addictive.iOS |Android

SWRLY

When Joesph Petzval originally released his iconic camera lens in the 1800’s it sparked a photographic revolution. Modern versions of the lens with a sharp central focus and a unique swirly bokeh effect at the edges have been created, but now there’s a digital option for your iPhone if you don’t want to drop a bunch of coin on a specialized lens. SWRLY is a modern take on the original Petzval lens that gives you control over the swirly lens blur, exposure, grain, tone and negative features while also giving you access to presets like daguerreotype, tintype and others.iOS

iTranslate Converse

iTranslate, the app that recently made headlines when it announced integrated iMessage translation, is back with iTranslate Converse, a revolutionary new speed translation app that works on iPhones (Android versions are set to be release in the fall) in real-time. Operating the app is as simple as turning your phone upside-down so the microphone is at the top, setting the two languages that will be translated and then tapping and holding when you speak. iTranslate will detect and convert languages in either direction, and the first 300 translations per month are free.iOS

Trips by Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet is one of our go to travel resources when we’re planning trips or actually exploring. Their adding to their successful app portfolio (Make My Day and Guides are both great) with Trips by Lonely Planet, an app that wants to help you share your travel experiences with friends and family in a format that’s not limited to just picture, video and a long commentary. With Trips you can craft full stories with words and images that will make everyone, including the people who find them through the Discover feature, jealous.iOS
