This One-Of-A-Kind 1959 Tojeiro California Spyder Is for Sale

The name John Tojeiro is a familiar one to anyone that has any interest in motorsport. After serving as an engineer in the Fleet Air Arm during WWII, Tojeiro would go on to put those skills into practice designing and engineering race car setups, and ultimately pioneering mid-engine builds. In 1959, Tojeiro set about designing what would be his final front-engine race car, the 1959 Tojeiro California Spyder you see here. Tojeiro lost interest in this car when he started working on the mid-engine Ecurie Ecosse Tojeiro, and the California Spider (chassis designation TCAL-59) was never completed. Eventually the car would end up in the hands of American auto-archaeologist John Muller who finally had the build finished with preserved original parts and a 292-cubic-inch GMC inline six-cylinder engine. It’s a truly remarkable, one-off car unlike anything else out there. The 1959 Tojeiro California Spyder is currently being auctioned off online by RM Sotheby’s. While it’s expected to bring between $90k – $140k, the current high bid is only $48k–which is an absolute steal for a vehicle with this kind of pedigree.
