You Can Now Build Your Own Motorcycle in a Weekend

Fictiv, a distributed manufacturing company with a network of vendors, teamed up with Amazon and their innovative new IoT platform to create this, the Fictiv Open Source Motorcycle (FOSMC). The concept bike is built with 57 open source, modular part designs that can be built with standard prototyping technologies like 3D printing, CNC machining and laser cutting, so you can finally build your own motorcycle in a weekend. The prototype FOSMC was conceived, designed and built using the Fictiv network and those same rapid prototyping technologies in around 12 weeks, and the thing looks and sounds absolutely awesome. Building your own, whether you choose to do it in a weekend or not, is going to require getting in touch with a few local vendors if you don’t have your machinery. But some of the parts like the sheet metal and the steel tubes can formed or bent in the garage with hand tools once you have the rough prototypes. No word yet on pricing or availability, but even if the concept never goes mass market it’s a great indication of where manufacturing is heading in the future.
