The Defender for the coming age is not a Defender at all; it’s the just unveiled Bollinger B1. With the rugged, boxy look of something out of Land Rover’s archives, the B1 is actually an all-electric, off-road workhorse built by a small company in upstate New York. Bollinger Motors, which took the cover off the B1 yesterday at an event in Manhattan, is entering the electric game from a new angle, a rougher and less sparky clean angle. The B1 has a range of up to 200 miles, produces 360 horsepower, and hits 60 from a dead stop in just 4.5 seconds. Floor pans inside can be washed clean, it’s capable of towing up to 6,100 lbs, and the ground clearance can be adjusted from 10 to 20 inches. It combines the clean functionality of the electric cars coming to market with the brawn that has made Land Rover such a desirable name in groups for years. Retail is expected to be around $60,000.
