You don’t really hear too much about microcars these days, but they were all the rage after the BMW Isetta and the microcar craze in the 50s. One of the most respected microcars that was ever released was the famous Messerschmitt Kabinenroller with its unique lines, three wheels and bubble top. The 1960 F.M.R. Tg 500 ‘Tiger’ is a rare variant of that car–with the proper amount of wheels!–that was produced independently by Fritz Fend at his firm F.M.R. He didn’t stop at four wheels and an updated design, either. He outfitted the Tg 500 to compete with post-war European sports cars with a 494 cc, two-stroke, twin-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed and reverse gearbox on a Formula 1-inspired subframe. Only 320 examples of the Tiger were ever produced, and this is one of only 150 known to have survived. This 1960 F.M.R. Tg 500 ‘Tiger’ will roll across the block during RM Sotheby’s Elkhart Collection auction on August 23 – 24. It’s expected to fetch between $150,000 – $200,000.
