James Joseph “Whitey” Bulger, Jr., boss of the Winter Hill Gang and the person Johnny Depp played in Black Mass, had all of his assets seized in 2011 from his hideout in Santa Monica, and the U.S. Marshals sold everything to the tune of over $100k in a recent asset forfeiture auction. What’s a man indicted on 19 counts of murder and found guilty of 11 have in his collection? Asics sneakers. Wide-brimmed hats. Books about everything from the mafia to WWII. A 14-karat gold claddagh ring with a three-carat diamond that can only really be described as “mob jewelry.” Catherine Greig, Bulger’s girlfriend, also had some items in the auction like tiny cat figurines and mugs. All proceeds from the sale went to Bulger’s victims.
