Victor Castanera is a product designer focused on experimental design with new techniques and materials, which is why he was tapped by Land Rover to create a collaboration piece based on the new Range Rover Velar. The end result is what you see here—the Velar lounge chair. At first glance, it doesn’t really seem like the chair shares much in common with the future classic that is the Velar, but when you delve a little deeper it begins to make sense. Castanera was inspired by “the proportions and duality” of the upper part and lower part of the Velar, along with the the fact that the vehicle “makes complexity look very simple.” That was translated into the chair that’s divided into two separate parts—a back rest of bent wood veener and a seat, each created from ash wood but in entirely different ways. We don’t expect the Velar Lounge Chair to ever be something available for purchase, but it’s a damn shame because it would make a fine reading chair.
