About a decade ago, the iconic Chelsea Hotel (aka Hotel Chelsea or just The Chelsea) that artists, authors and musicians ranging from Andy Warhol and Bob Marley to Jack Kerouac and Jackson Pollack called home closed for renovations. This facelift is significant not just because it’s going to be a fantastic new venue in the neighborhood, but also because it gives you the opportunity to own the doors that these fascinating tenants once used on a regular basis. On April 12 at the Ricco/Maresca Gallery, Guernsey’s will be auctioning off a collection of more than 50 doors from the hotel with a substantial portion of the proceeds going to City Harvest, the non-profit organization that pioneered food rescue in 1982. Despite each of the doors being white-washed at one point, they all tell a unique story through the markings on them. If you’re in New York, the doors will be on display in the gallery from April 5 until the auction.
