The original Alpine A110 is obscure to most homegrown Americans, but it was a rallying legend in Europe where it dominated the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally and then the World Rally Championship in 1973. It was also damn fine to look at with its slinky and sporty body. The legendary rally racer was revived in 2017, and now it has the SportsX treatment that adds some significant changes. The base car, the light A110 Pure, gets wider and adds a lifted suspension and a radical ski rack off its sloping rear roofline. It also gets a slick black-and-white matte paint job, matte black wheels, X’d out rally foglights, and a revised front fascia. Power comes from the turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that rockets the car to 60 mph in a little over four seconds, making it properly quick. Whether or not it will actually hit the off-road races remains to be seen, but it’s great to see the A110 get the attention it deserves.
