Buildings, especially the ones in Venice, are inherently artistic, but the Ca’Sagredo Hotel is a building transformed into something new by artist Lorenzo Quinn. Built as a statement “on climate change and the role people must play in supporting Venice’s unique world heritage,” “Support” is a monumental sculpture with a pair of 5,000 pound white hands emerging from Venice’s Grand Canal to support the sides of the Ca’Sagredo Hotel. The internationally renowned sculptor based the hands on those of his children and created the piece in a Barcelona studio before being taken to the installation site in Venice via boat. Initially unveiled as part of the Venice Biennale, “Support” will be on display in the Grand Canal until the end of November. Time to book those plane tickets. Support is just one more great reason to visit Venice, and who knows how long it will remain above water.
