If you’re of a certain age, you grew up with video game characters that weren’t voiced by professional actors and didn’t have faces that looked lifelike. You grew up with characters like Donkey Kong and Mario (originally “Jumpman”). If you’ve longed for these simpler days but have clocked far too many hours on the same games, you’re in luck. A rare, officially-licensed Donkey Kong game was just put online for you to enjoy. Donkey Kong 3: The Great Counterattack was developed by Hudson Soft in 1984 for Nintendo and hit select arcades, though it has remained mostly on disks overseas. A copy of the rare game was purchased by a group of fans who extracted the data and made it playable online via an X1 emulator. The game consists of 20 levels, though it’s notoriously difficult, so those higher levels remain a mystery for most gamers who have played the unique Donkey Kong game. Carve out some time for a fresh challenge and a dose of nostalgia.
