Damián Ortega is a Mexican artist living and working out of Mexico City with a career that started as a political cartoonist but has ballooned into something far more sculptural. He made waves originally with a piece made entirely of tortillas that could be arranged at will for different showings and is still part of the collection at the Guggenheim, but it’s the disassembled art installations that will really blow your mind. From living and dining rooms to a Volkswagen Beetle and a Vespa scooter, Ortega blows up and deconstructs modern pieces before suspending them from the ceiling piece in a way that makes them feel like three dimensional technical drawings you can interact with. While his works are awe-inspiring and downright cool, they also evoke a sense of wonder about the complexity of everyday objects and the impact these items can have on the world around them.
