Anmahian Winton Architects is a Cambridge-based architecture firm with work all over the world that focuses on collaboration, innovation and sustainable design. More importantly, as is evidenced by the Gemma Observatory, their works are beautiful, functional, interesting and award-winning. The Gemma Observatory by Anmahian Winton Architects is a private astronomical observatory built in the middle of a three-mile “dark” area (as in it has very little light pollution) on top of a remote mountain summit in central New Hampshire. The many faceted structure uses zinc cladding on the exterior and fir plywood on the interior to create a space that’s warm and inviting on the inside while still perfectly suited for studying the sky. When you’re not using the upstairs observation deck or the primary viewing platform in the turret, the first floor contains a research office, sleeping bunk and warming room accessible via helical stair case. This would be a fantastic hideaway or lair for any of you interested in the stars.
