If you’re a fan of Formula 1 racing, this car definitely looks familiar because it was the vehicle Ayrton Senna piloted to his record-breaking sixth win at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1993. It recently sold for over $5,000,000 at a Bonhams auction in Monaco. That’s right, six zeros. This particular car is incredibly special thanks to the V8 Cosworth-Ford ‘HB’ engine and McLaren gearbox, but a lot of the intrigue comes down to the perseverance and sheer force-of-will of the driver. Always a group to do their research, we’ll let Bonhams take it away for the description: “Ayrton Senna is widely regarded as having been absolutely the most charismatic Grand Prix driver of the modern era, and this individual McLaren-Ford MP4/8A is the car with which his team, McLaren International, (albeit temporarily) surpassed Ferrari as the most successful team in Formula 1 World Championship history.” Even though you don’t have the opportunity to own it now because the auction is closed, you should still head over to the Bonham’s site to read the history about the car and driver because it’s absolutely fascinating.
