In the pantheon of rare prototype cars, this one might be in the upper ranks. Not only is the Lancia Fulvia HF Competizione unique, but it also has a storied past. Alejandro de Tomaso (of De Tomaso Pantera fame) wanted to take over Lancia and go head-to-head with Ferrari. The Fulvia HF Competizione was the first car to show what the brand could do under Ford ownership and de Tomaso’s leadership. The coup never happened, and this car is the only thing left of that attempt. It was bigger and badder than anything Lancia had made up ’til then, and it was designed for track duties, as well as the street. An adjustable wing, aluminum gas tank for lightness, roll cage, and plexiglass racing windows were aimed at racing, while the long greenhouse, swept up tail section, and big hood scoop gave it a strong visual presence. Now, it’s up for sale by RM Sotheby’s and for a scant $182,000.
