If your definition of “ultimate beach vehicle” is anything like ours, you’re probably thinking about a Defender, a buggy or a classic FJ. When tasked with that brief from a customer, Jonathan Ward from ICON 4×4 decided on the 1965 Jeep Wagoneer. Why go for the old school shovel nose instead of the later ’80s version that’s as classically American as you can get when it comes to vintage SUVs? Because the quality of the more modern one, as he told The Drive, “has no comparison to the pre-focus group options.” We’re glad he did because, like everything else that rolls out of the ICON 4×4 shop, this thing is downright gorgeous and powerful to boot. 6.2-liter LS3 engine outputting 440 horsepower mated to a GM transmission. Brembo brakes. Art Morrison chassis. The list goes on. They also completely redid the interior with modern and custom parts that still retain the iconic feel of the original. One look at this truck is all it takes to justify the three years of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars that went into it.
