There have been more than a few great vehicles produced for the military over the years, but few of them compare to the sheer utilitarianism that is the Hummer. That is until General Motors Defense dropped the details on the $214million contract they were just awarded by Uncle Sam to produce the Infantry Squad Vehicle for the US Armed Forces. “Designed to provide rapid ground mobility, the expeditionary ISV is a light and agile all-terrain troop carrier intended to transport a nine-Soldier infantry squad moving throughout the battlefield. The ISV is light enough to be sling loaded from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter and compact enough to fit inside a CH-47 Chinook helicopter for air transportability.” In terms of utilitarian design, this one definitely takes the cake with an almost complete lack of any sort of body structure outside of a skeletonized crew area. In terms of actual production, the ISV is going to be easier, cheaper and faster to produce than other options because it uses 90% off-the-shelf production parts from a Chevy Colorado ZR2–including the 186-horsepower, 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine with six-speed automatic transmission.
