There’s no denying that BMW makes gorgeous machines in their own right. The BMW Art Car Project started in 1975 transformed them into rolling works of art when founder and French racecar driver Hervé Poulain tapped artists to create works right on the cars. Plenty of famous artists have worked on a total of 19 different art cars, but our favorite is easily the M1 that Andy Warhol did in 1979. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the car, and BMW is celebrating with a modern photoshoot that shows off the car like it has never been seen before. The location was an old factory building in Cologne that provided the perfect drab backdrop for the colorful car. Behind the lens was photographer Stephan Bauer–the victor of BMW’s “Shootout 2018” Social Media Contest–who did a downright amazing job bringing the entire shoot to life. But don’t just take our word for it, the pictures speak for themselves.
