One look at this 1952 Alfa Romeo 1900 M ‘Matta’ reconnaissance vehicle was probably all it took for you to decide you want to be the winning bidder when the gavel falls at the Sotheby’s auction in London this September. There’s more to the story of this vehicle than the fact it’s a head turner. Produced from 1952-1954, this vehicle was originally conceived of when the Italian military put out a call for a reconnaissance vehicle like the Willys Jeep. Only 2,050 (2,000 for the military and 50 for civilians) of the vehicle were produced because Italy’s Ministry of Defense ultimately ended sending the order to Fiat. This “Mad” (from ‘Matta’) Alfa might only have 65hp and an 1,884cc DOHC engine, but it’s off road ready, rare and one hell of a looker.
