If you think a Toyota Land Cruiser is a hulking, 7-passenger modern SUV, you’d be right and wrong. The original FJ40 Land Cruiser is actually an iconic Japanese jeep that’s worshipped amongst the automotive cognoscenti, to the point of being cultic. This restored 1981 version is about as purist as it gets with nary a modern touch to it, which is what makes it so great. The vintage bodywork and paint are true to the original, and even the tires are period correct. Painstaking details like the “dog dish” hubcaps, gray vinyl seats, and gold cadmium plating on hardware equate to intensely covetous feelings on the part of collectors. The original 4.2-liter inline six engine sits under the hood, mated to the proper 4-speed manual. No modern off-roader can come close to eliciting the feeling this FJ40 Land Cruise can offer. Yours for $67,500, a virtual bargain.
