The Volkswagen 181 was a two-wheel drive, four door, convertible Jeep-alternative originally developed for the West German Army. It finally landed in the States in the early 70s where it got the name Volkswagen Thing and developed an almost cult-like status over the years. The weird and quirky vehicle is part truck, part Beetle and all around fun to drive, which led to its incredible popularity as a rental adventure vehicle. This Modified 1974 Volkswagen Thing was completely restored from the ground up with literally everything you’d want in a Thing rebuild. There’s a bright yellow paint job, brand new black soft top, roll cage, bucket seats, new bumpers and chrome 15″ wheels. Under the hood, you’ll find a 1,776cc flat-four completely rebuilt with new parts, a PerTronix electronic ignition, GEX Pro Sand IRS four-speed manual transaxle and an upgraded exhaust. The Modified 1974 Volkswagen Thing is up for auction on Bring a Trailer with the current high bid of $17,500. The auction ends this afternoon, so get your bids in now if you’re interested.
