1969 Alfa Romeo Iguana

Legendary automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro has penned more exotic beauties than just about anyone else, but there’s one stunner that never made it to production: The Alfa Romeo Iguana. It might have actually given birth to the wedge-shaped, slant-nosed exotics that still live on today. The Iguana was sleek but muscular, elegant but aggressive. Using a spare chassis from the famous Alfa Tipo 33 Stradale, the Iguana was the first concept car created by Giugiaro’s ItalDesign studio. Debuting at the 1969 Turin Motor Show pioneered using brushed stainless steel parts and inspired future Giugiaro designs such as the 1971 Maserati Bora and 1972 Maserati Merak. Elements of the Iguana also led to famous exotics like the Ferrari 308 by design house Pininfarina and the Lamborghini Countach by Bertone. To call the Iguana influential would be a vast understatement. The iconic concept car still lives under the spotlights of the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo.
