Coinciding with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and filled with plenty of unique pieces of automotive history of their own, the RM Sotheby’s Monterery auction is always a sight to to behold—even if you can’t afford any of the cars.
This year, things are getting even more interesting because a 1956 Maserati A6G/2000 Berlinetta Zagato is crossing the block. This car is incredibly rare from the drop, as it’s one of only 21 originally intended for racing and was hand-built with lightweight bodywork made of hand-hammered aluminum panels. It’s even more rare because, as David Swig of Sotheby’s puts it, “this is one of only a very small handful, four or five of these cars, that has always retained its original engine and gearbox.” The engine in question is only a 2-liter, inline-6, but it’s still a numbers matching car.
When it hits the auction block August 24–25 during the RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale, the Maserati is estimated to bring in upwards of $4.25 million, which might actually be a bargain for a vehicle this unique.
