This Writer’s Cabin Has Folding Walls

If you’re looking for a secluded cabin to finish the next great American novel or just relax over a long weekend, you won’t find much better than the False Bay Writer’s Cabin. Designed by internationally renowned firm Olson Kundig—the same firm responsible for the Cabin at Longbranch—this minimal space is 500 square feet of tranquility situated on ten acres of property on San Juan Island in Washington. Like their previous works, this tiny cabin straddles the worlds of interior and exterior by essentially being a glass house surrounded by three exterior walls that fold down into three separate decks. The modern day castle drawbridge setup uses a system of hydraulic winches and wire rope to lower the shutter decks when the cabin is in use or seal them up for safety and security. Continuing with the transformational nature of the space, a Murphy bed is camouflaged in the wall and the fireplace can be rotated 180 degrees to also heat the deck.
