If we had to pick a desert island food, we’d debate for a few minutes and then ultimately all settle on pizza because there are so many different types, styles, varieties and flavors that we could happily eat it for the rest of our lives. That being said, we’re not sure we’d be capable of being objective enough to rank “The 101 Best Pizzas in America” like The Daily Meal just did. Here are the criterion used to rate our countries best pies–“We start by defining the perfect pie. What are the essentials? Suffice it to say, no matter your pizza denomination, we believe the following qualities are essential: a nuanced sauce, neither too sweet nor too salty (assuming that the pie has sauce); quality, well-distributed cheese (assuming that it has cheese); quality, sensibly combined toppings; a flavorful, savory crust; and, perhaps most importantly, a judicious, well-balanced and pleasing ratio of sauce, cheese, toppings and crust that maintains a structural integrity no matter the style.” After nearly 1,000 pizzas in 2019 alone, they settled on their top 5 that includes Buddy’s Pizza in Detroit, Pequod’s in Chicago, Razza Pizza Artigianale in Jersey City, Lucali in Brooklyn and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven.
