Over the past few decades, graffiti has evolved from simple tags and street art to the world of galleries and fine art. Portugese graffiti artist Rodrigo Miguel Sepúlveda Nunes, aka Vile, is combining the two in a very unique way. Vile’s pieces take that ‘Large Letter’ block style lettering you’re familiar with from the “Greetings from…” vintage postcards and adds backgrounds in the interiors of each letter of his name to create an optical illusion that looks like he physically cut through the wall to expose what’s behind it. It’s a weird, almost through-the-looking-glass effect that blends created work backgrounds like space scenes, gardens and abandoned rooms with the natural aspects of the walls they’re painted on. Each one of his works is so clever and well executed that we’d have no problem hanging and of them in our home–even though they’re all built around his name.
