District 9 sets the stage in a disturbingly realistic telling of extraterrestrials becoming stranded on earth. There was no invasion of a major US city, just a group of aliens who arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa living in squalor on their ship. At first humans welcomed them in, but several years in, when the story starts, the “Prawns” are living in a violent slum while the government secretly tests alien weapons. The story really begins however, when a self-serving bureaucrat is exposed to a substance that begins to transform him into one of the aliens. Gaining insight into what it’s like to be an outsider he forms an alliance with one of the Prawns and together they try to take on the MNU. Fans of sci-fi, drama and action films alike should check out the District 9 Two-Disc Edition, full of thought provoking drama as it with violent gun fights and intense action.
