Banksy’s ‘Devolved Parliament’ Painting Is Going to Auction

It might feel like an eternity ago, but it was actually less than a year ago when A Banksy Painting Self-Destructed After Selling For $1.4 Million at auction. The artist–and that specific auction room where the painting “self-destructed”–is getting a lot more attention this week because his Devolved Parliament work that depicts the entire UK parliament Commons chamber as a pack of chimpanzees is going up for auction at Sotheby’s in the very same room. Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s European head of contemporary art, said “Regardless of where you sit in the Brexit debate, there’s no doubt that this work is more pertinent now than it has ever been, capturing unprecedented levels of political chaos and confirming Banksy as the satirical polemicist of our time.” At nearly 4 metres (13ft), Devolved Parliament is the largest known canvas by Banksy. And with an estimate of approximately $2 million to $2.5 million, this could be the highest selling piece the artist has ever created.
