What to Drink This Weekend: Tequila Sunrise

Looking for a new cocktail to try out this weekend? Want to wind down with a fresh new drink? We’ve got you covered. Here’s what you should drink this weekend.

The classic Tequila Sunrise is a criminally underrated drink in our book. For many, it belongs in the company of the Cosmo or a Skinny Margarita – cocktails that don’t get taken very seriously. But, not only is a Tequila Sunrise easy to make, it’s deliciously refreshing. Plus, the simple drink serves as an excellent canvas for experimentation.

This 3-ingredient cocktail was coined in the ’70s by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice at the Trident bar in Sausalito, California. Much of its mystique and lasting appeal, though, is owed to the Rolling Stones and their so-called “the cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour” of 1972. Now, bartenders are using the simple combination of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine to make visually impressive and flavorful concoctions.

Tequila Sunrise Ingredients

Tequila – The original recipe calls for blanco tequila but once you’ve mastered the classic we’d suggest mixing in some alternates. Try a split base of mezcal and tequila. Or experiment with a reposado. Our picks for tequila would be Patrón Silver or JAJA Blanco. For a more elevated approach, mix in some Madre Mezcal or Del Maguey Vida de Muertos Mezcal.

Orange Juice – No store-bought OJ should be used in this drink. Only fresh-squeezed oranges will do. Try mixing it up with blood oranges or even some bitter oranges for a more complex, less sweet rendition of the Tequila Sunrise.

Grenadine – Lastly, you’ll need some grenadine. Every home bar should have classic grenadine syrup, but you can also try experimenting with some homemade syrups like spicy hibiscus or rose syrup.

Tequila Sunrise Recipe

  1. Combine 2 ounces of tequila and 4 ounces of orange juice over ice in a highball glass.
  2. Float 3/4 ounce grenadine on the back of a bar spoon into the glass.
  3. Garnish with an orange slice and a Luxardo cherry.
  4. Enjoy!
