David Hockney’s The Splash is one of those contemporary works that ranks up there with the best and brightest–we’re talking Munch, Monet, Warhol, John, Lichtenstein and the like–despite the fact that it’s a relatively simplistic painting of a Californian landscape complete with pool. If you’ve got a spare few dozen million dollars, and you’re looking to spice up your art collection–Hockney’s The Splash is going to be sold by Sotheby’s later this year. Here’s what Hockney himself had to say about the work–“I loved the idea of painting this thing that lasts for two seconds; it takes me two weeks to paint this event that lasts for two seconds. Everyone knows a splash can’t be frozen in time, so when you see it like that in a painting it’s even more striking than in a photograph.” The Splash will be auctioned off during Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction on February 11th.
