While the most famous architects of the 20th Century list is sure to include the likes of Saarinen, Gehry, Mendelsohn, Wright, Pei and Khan, we would be remiss if we didn’t also include Matti Suuronen and his Futuro and Venturo homes from the Casa Finlandia series. Originally designed in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a shape reminiscent of the stereotypical shape of a flying saucer, fewer than 100 of the Futuro houses were ever built. Composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastic and polyester-polyurethane, the structure measured 13′ high and 26′ in diameter, with drop-down stairs for entry and a number of interior accouterments worth mentioning. Before we get to that, out of the 100 total Futuro houses that were produced, this is one of less than ten remaining from the versions built in New Zealand, and it’s for sale. In addition to the UFO exterior, you get: original fiberglass bench, 2 x 2 seater couch units installed (additional 2 seater in storage), fiberglass shelving wall units (additional 2 in storage), original custom-shaped mattress, and the historical plaques installed around the interior surfaces. If you have the space and the money to have it delivered from NZ, this is a piece of architectural history you can proudly display on the lawn.
