The Best Workout You Can Do This Winter Is Stretch

Staying in shape on a budget doesn't have to be so hard.

The Best Workout You Can Do This Winter Is Stretch

The cycle of fitness ebbs and flows throughout the year for yours truly. I find it much easier to stay in good shape during the summer months. I can walk or bike just about anywhere, and running doesn’t require layers of warm clothes and a ton of motivation. During the winter months, it takes quite a bit of courage to get out for a few miles around the neighborhood; without a gym membership, having access to fancy equipment and weights can be a challenge.

I’ve had to dedicate more time to personal health after years of back pain and a loss of flexibility. So after a few months of physical therapy it became clear that active stretching would be critical for my health. Stretching not only offers increased flexibility, it can provide an aerobic workout and help strengthen targeted muscles. Moreover, it can lead to a longer and ultimately more active lifespan. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy. You just need a little time, space, and, if you desire, a few pieces of equipment. But ultimately there’s very little cost to stretching.

Need some inspiration? There are tons of excellent fitness apps and YouTube channels dedicated to at-home stretching workouts and even yoga sessions.

The Best Gear for At-Home Workouts

I’ve spent the last few months developing my own daily stretching routine, and it’s helped mitigate a lot of my ongoing pain and soreness. I started by just stretching on my carpeted floor, but over time I’ve accumulated and tested some exercise equipment that’s made a big difference. Below you’ll find our recommendations for the best gear for at-home stretching and workouts.
