The Amphicar might seem like a joke, but it’s actually kind of legendary. The German-made amphibious car was built between 1961 and 1968, and this particular one just sold on Bring-A-Trailer for the price of a brand new 2020 Corvette Stingray. The Amphicar can be driven like a regular vehicle on the open road, but when you shift the car into neutral, you can then activate the propellers via a lever and then utilize the front wheels as the rudder. The white on red and white vinyl Amphicar has a rear-mounted small-displacement, 43-horsepower, four-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with period-correct whitewall tires. Exhaust ports are high on the body to keep water out, and the floor of the Amphica is rubber. The odometer reads 3,250 (but it’s listed as TMU, or true mileage unknown). Interestingly enough, the seller brought it from Florida to Washington State in 1990, sold it, and then repurchased it years later. The car includes owner’s manual, service records, and clean title. The Amphicar won’t break any marine or land-based speed records, but it still manages to be one of the most creative vehicles ever made. A mere 3,878 were made, and only about 600 remain in operation, so this one is pretty special.
