Earlier this year, Volkswagen officially stopped production of the VW Beetle, one of the most iconic and influential cars to ever roll off an assembly line. The modern versions had strayed pretty far from the vintage Type 1 styling that we all grew to know and love, which is probably why the brand decided to keep it closer to that original form when they resurrected the Beetle for a new electric concept. That’s right, the Bug is already back… kind of. Produced in conjunction with their partner eClassics, the Volkswagen e-Beetle Concept takes the electric drive, single-speed gearbox and battery systems from the upcoming VW e-up! city car and fits them to classic models to create an electrified Beetle that can hit up to 90 MPH with a range of 124 miles. Volkswagen supplied the parts and eClassics carried out the conversion near Stuttgart, so the E-Beetle is really just proof-of-concept at this time. With that said, if this was a future vehicle offering we’d be some of the first people in line to buy one as long as it looked like the one of those classic beauties.
