In the age where we all carry a computer in our pocket that we can use to look up reviews, schedules and information about everything from movies and restaurants, to concerts and political candidates, we don’t really need the familiar poster anymore. Despite the fact they’re not necessary, there’s still something inherently cool and nostalgic about posters whether they’re hung by the marquee of a movie theater or wheat pasted to a construction site. Which is why the team behind Poster House decided to launch a new museum in New York that’s dedicated exclusively to posters. From Art Nouveau to Bollywood and Rosie the Riveter to Farrah Fawcett, Poster House presents a global view of posters through exhibitions, events and publications that aims to engage and educate audiences. The museum just opened a few weeks ago with the current exhibitions “Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau / Nouvelle Femme” and “Designing Through the Wall: Cyan in the 1990s.” Upcoming exhibitions include “The Golden Age of Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana” and “Three Years Later: The 2017 Women’s March & Where We Are Today.” Poster House is open 11am – 6pm all week except for Tuesdays.
