This Influential Chair Is Finally Being Manufactured After Almost a Century

There are a lot of famous designers that continue to influence the world we live in to this day. Charles and Ray Eames. Hans Wegner. Isamu Noguchi. Eero Saarinen. One designer that doesn’t get anywhere near enough love is Finn Juhl, the Danish architect, interior, industrial and furniture designer that’s arguably single-handedly responsible for bringing Danish Modern design to America. Almost a century ago–in 1938 to be specific–Juhl created the first two iterations of the Grasshopper Chair you see here and debuted them at a Copenhagen design fair.  The debut of the chair in comparison to everything on display was nothing short of a dumpster fire. It was so bad that Juhl himself purchased the two chairs he had designed. Now, after more than 80 years, the chair with the tricky angles and next to impossible construction that was so far ahead of its time is finally being produced for people that understand the artist’s original vision. If you’re interested in actually purchasing one of the iconic chairs, be prepared to bust out the no limit credit card. A single one of these chairs from Danish Design Store costs just shy of $15k.
