There are so many things about Mos Def that represent Cool Material – Def Poetry, a room for his shoes, Boondocks – and none of that even begins to address his ridiculous musical chops (or the ones on his face for that matter). Yeah, there’s collaborations with Gorillaz, Kanye, and The Roots, but Mos Def’s solo career includes albums you’ve heard – The New Danger, True Magic, and one you haven’t (it’s not released yet) – The Ecstatic. The point is, there’s a Mos Def song for every mood you’re in – ripped, drunk, or none of the above.
But Max Tannone doesn’t agree with us, which is why he remixed Mos Def with classic dub reggae tracks. Mos Dub isn’t music you’re going to hear at a club the next time you find yourself there, and that’s one of its best qualities. It’s not white boy dance music (work on your dice rolling, sprinklering, and pop-n-lock later), but it’s got a steady beat that will get you high – or at least help in the process. So go ahead and throw on Mos Dub and listen as all your cares in the world melt away. It’s Sunday, you weren’t going to do anything productive today anyway.
