In what is sure to be interesting news to most of you–it was to us–pigeons are big business in the world of online auctions. We’re not talking about some new scooter brand or restorer of vintage SUVs, we’re talking about the actual birds that anyone from a big city probably refers to as rats of the sky. At an auction earlier this month, 178 pigeons were sold for an average price of over $15,000 per bird, but the big news is the impressively colored record holder Armando. Armando holds records for everything from “best one day long distance pigeon ever” to multiple wins at the national Limoges II races, and he absolutely smashed records by selling for 1,252,000 Euros, or just under $1.5 million US. As pedigree is just as important in pigeons as it is in any other race animal, seven of his youngsters were put up for auction as well, with an average price for those birds of around $25k.
