As supercars go, the current crop of them is mindblowing in terms of technology and speed. Hybrid power, carbon fiber tubs, launch control, all more than we can wrap our brains around. But the BMW M1 is almost the anti-supercar by comparison. Nearly three decades old, the M1 was powered by a 3.5-liter mid-mounted inline-six engine with 266 horsepower. Back then, the thing was a rocket, hurtling to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Its slick fiberglass body was designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro and commissioned by Lamborghini. Lambo ran out of money to build the M1, so BMW took it into their own hands by outsourcing the bodywork and installing the engine and transmission, and handling the testing themselves. Sadly, only 399 of these current legends were built for roadgoing. This particular M1 (265/399) is about as perfect as it gets with a full engine restoration and thorough refurbishing to put it in showroom condition. The work to put it in its current state amounts to $100K, and it appears to have been worth every penny.
