Want to do your planet a solid? NASA is currently looking for a Planetary Protection Officer, someone to safeguard our space rock from alien lifeforms, and they want to pay said person anywhere from $124,406 to $187,000 to do it. No this is not a joke. Okay, so you aren’t exactly playing the role of Will Smith in Independence Day, hoisting futuristic weapons to your shoulder and flying spaceships, but you are, honestly, protecting the planet. The job requires someone make sure robotic equipment and spacecrafts returning to Earth are clear of “organic constituent and biological contamination” from the places they traveled to. The position has actually existed since the ’60s, but the opening has excited a lot of people. Unfortunately, having “seen Arrival a bunch” is not enough to qualify you for the job.
