The campaign for Frieze New York 2017 chose to focus on artifacts from famous artists’ studios rather than the works of art you’d more traditionally find as part of a campaign. Amy Preston (head of design for Frieze) and designer Joe Cole Porter teamed up with photographer Nicholas Calcott and the foundations responsible for the material possessions of some of New York’s most significant 20th-century artists. The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Calder Foundation. Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. The Keith Haring Foundation. Judd Foundation. The Noguchi Museum. Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Working tirelessly with all those foundations and their archivists, each photograph represents one of those rare, in-studio moments that gives you a glimpse into the artist’s process, treasures and tools. Frieze New York concluded last weekend, but rest assured there will be more museum-worthy fairs from Frieze in the future.
