Most music fans know who singer-songwriter John Mayer is. But most folks don’t know he’s an avid watch collector and a major contributor to the very popular online watch magazine known as Hodinkee. Back when Hodinkee was just starting out , they launched a video known as Talking Watches, where Hodinkee founder Ben Clymer sat down with Mayer to discuss horology and Mayer’s passion for and collection of fine timepieces. Some forty-odd episodes later of the horological version of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Mayer returns for his ‘second hand’ at Talking Watches. He and Clymer reminisce about the original and then dive deep into Mayer’s current collection that makes our own look like the jewelry counter at Target. He loses us a little when he talks about a custom watch Patek Phillippe made just for him as if he just got an extra creamer from the Jiffy Lube coffee kiosk, but the rest is fascinating. So the man can write great songs, sing and play guitar, make millions off of it all, all while standing tall at well over 6 feet, date beauties all over the globe, and own numerous rare watches. Yep, we hate him.
