The melding of Japanese watch manufacturing and Italian design come together in this watch that pays homage to a late Brazilian Formula 1 race car driver. The SBJ003 is a collaboration between Seiko and automotive design house Giugiaro Design. The digital watch with the uniquely canted display is a modern recreation of the Seiko Speedmaster, originally created by Giorgetto Giugiaro, himself and worn by the legendary Ayrton Senna back in 1983. Horologists remember the two analog Speedmaster quart chronograph watches created with Giugiaro because of their unique pusher modules, but it’s the canted digital version that Senna wore due to its face that allowed the driver to see the time without moving his hand off the steering wheel. The re-issue here gets clad in all black and comes with Seiko’s legendary Hardlex mineral crystal, a fully rotating bezel, and all the bells and whistles including tachymeter, stopwatch, alarm, timer, and a full auto calendar until 2067. Only 3,000 of this unique timepiece will be made. Now, you just have to sign up for racing school to really pull it off.
