Fall is the best-dressed season. We aren’t the first to say it. Won’t be the last.
Summer asks you to look good while trying your best not to sweat through it. Winter eventually turns getting dressed into a survival drill. But fall? Fall gives you options, gentlemen. Everything’s on the table. Corduroy. Suede. Wool. Denim. Cashmere. Boots. Jackets over sweaters over T-shirts. Clothes with actual texture. Layered in all sorts of creative ways.
Here’s what we’re layering this year.
The Denim Layer, the Italian Way
[PARTNER] The denim shirt is always one of fall’s hardest-working layers. Luca Faloni just gives it an Italian education. Handcrafted in Northern Italy from premium mid-weight denim, its version comes with details you don’t usually find on something this easy to wear. Mother-of-pearl buttons, rare sartorial “giglio” stitching, and a “Paramontura” one-piece collar designed to keep its shape. Wear it solo while there’s still a little warmth in the air, open over a tee on vacation, or under chunky layers or even a blazer once winter arrives. Best part? The pre-washed denim only gets better with age.
PRO TIP: File this one away for gifting season. It’s the rare present that looks good on everyone, feels special right out of the box, and gets more personal the longer it’s worn.
Signature Innovations Group Corduroy Jacket Oregano
Textbook definition of go-to fall jacket. Corduroy. Deep oregano green. Flannel lining. Cut and sewn in Los Angeles. It looks like something you found in a particularly good vintage store, except you don’t have to spend three hours digging through racks and wondering about the previous owner. Wear it over an old T-shirt now. A sweater later. Repeat until spring.
Buck Mason Japanese Loomstate Selvedge Full Saddle Jean
Buck Mason’s Full Saddle Jean goes higher in the rise and fuller through the thigh before falling straight through the leg. Better yet, it’s made in Los Angeles from 14-ounce unsanforized selvedge denim woven by Kaihara in Japan. It’ll get better the more you wear it, which is convenient because you’re going to wear them a lot. Especially this time of year.
Dress them up with a sweater and blazer or pop on a hoodie for a casual look.
Flint and Tinder Boiled Wool Chore Blazer
If a blazer and a chore coat had a baby…
The Boiled Wool Chore Blazer has enough structure to clean up jeans and enough workwear DNA to keep you from looking like you’re headed to a corporate happy hour event. It’s made from 100% boiled wool, too, giving it warmth without turning it into another piece of heavy outerwear. Textbook functional smart casual.
ASRV Tetra-Lite 7" Liner Short
Yes, shorts. In the Fall Style Guide.
Because you don’t stop going to the gym when the leaves change colors. ASRV’s Tetra-Lite shorts have a seven-inch inseam, built-in liner, ventilation, anti-odor technology, zippered storage, and pockets in the liner designed to keep your phone from ricocheting around while you run.
We’ve been wearing them for about a month now, and in that time, they’ve become the pair that we always look for first.
Elk Head Heritage Stripe Elk Patch Rugby Jersey
Rugby shirts are having a moment. We support this. It’s a cooler version of athleisure.
Elk Head’s version gets the important stuff right. Heavyweight-feeling double-jersey cotton, a proper one-piece placket, a substantial collar, and enough old-school athletic detailing to make it look like you might know the rules of rugby.
Tecovas The Dean Boot
Cowboy boots without going full cowboy.
The Dean takes the bones of a Western boot and cleans them up with a slim eight-inch shaft, round toe, stacked heel, and a side zipper. In Scotch goat leather, they’ll crease, scuff, darken, and generally look better the less precious you are about them.
Wear them under jeans. Or with a tan suit.
1973 Omega De Ville Vintage
Sometimes, the best new watch is 53 years old.
This restored 1973 Omega De Ville has a 32mm stainless steel case, automatic Caliber 1012 movement, and a smoked sapphire-blue dial that’s just interesting and off-beat enough without pulling focus. It’s small. It’s elegant. It’s a little weird. In other words, it has personality.
Fall watches should.
COS Pure Cashmere Triangle Scarf
Hot take. Get a cashmere scarf instead of a cashmere sweater this year.
Wearing the same sweater three days in a row? Generally not recommended. But a scarf? Wear it every day in a row. This red one from COS turns pure cashmere into a small red triangle that feels somewhere between scarf, bandana, and finishing touch. Tie it around your neck and suddenly the clothes you already own look more intentional.
A little red goes a long way. Toss it on with any outfit that feels a little too generic.
Todd Snyder Italian Suede Grant Jacket
Suede jackets never left. And yet, somehow it feels like they’re back?
Todd Snyder’s is made from Italian lamb suede, cut short like a vintage trucker, and finished with a subtle Western yoke across the chest. The suede will pick up character as it ages. Which is great. Because it’s a bit of a splurge price-wise, but it is a jacket you’ll grow old with.
RRL Reversible Double-Knit Jacquard Vest
The problem with reversible clothing is that one side is usually the side you actually bought it for.
Not here. RRL gives you a vintage-blanket-inspired jacquard on one side and micro-houndstooth on the other. One leans ranch house. The other leans old Manhattan. Both look like something Ralph Lauren himself might wear while standing beside an antique Land Rover.
Two vests. One closet hanger. That’s just responsible shopping.
House of Bruar Lambswool Graphic Crew Neck
There’s a mallard on your sweater.
Not a tiny embroidered one tucked “discreetly” onto your chest. A proper duck, flying proudly across the front of your sweater.
House of Bruar makes the whole thing in lambswool, turning what could have been novelty knitwear into something surprisingly handsome. Wear it seriously. That’s the trick.
PANGAIA Heavyweight Zip Up Hoodie
Hoodies shouldn’t be complicated.
PANGAIA brings things back to where they should be. Heavyweight fabric, clean lines, a good zip, and very little else. The black version is the kind of hoodie you can throw under nearly every jacket in this guide without making the outfit feel like you just came from the gym.
Although, technically, we gave you shorts for that too.
EMU Australia Platinum Esperence
Fall style doesn’t end when you get home. You could argue that’s where it truly begins.
EMU Australia’s Platinum Esperence slippers are fully lined in Australian sheepskin and look just rugged enough to prevent the word “slippers” from bothering you. Put them by the door. Come home. Take off the Tecovas. Put these on.
Congratulations. You’ve changed for dinner. Which is some kind of one-pot soup, obviously.
Anthropologie Sophie Faux Fur Throw Blanket
Yes, we put a blanket in the Fall Style Guide. Again.
And yes, it’s the Sophie. Again.
Some things don’t need reinvention. Anthropologie’s absurdly soft, heavyweight faux-fur throw is still one of the easiest ways to make your couch feel approximately 70 percent more expensive and November feel considerably less offensive.
Fashion is important. So is knowing when to stay home.
Uppercut Deluxe Control Cream
Looking good isn’t just about what you’re wearing.
Uppercut Deluxe’s Control Cream gives your hair a little texture, a little control, and a natural finish without making it look overly styled. It tames frizz and cleans things up, while preserving that all-important I woke up like this illusion.
Your secret is safe with us.
