Annihilation is the first book in the Southern Reach Trilogy by writer Jeff VanderMeer. It was something of a sensation, though it never achieved the mainstream success it deserved. That is all about to change as it’s brought to the big screen. Starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscaar Isaac, the sci-fi film takes place at a remote spot known as “Area X.” All the missions to Area X have resulted in catastrophe for the crew, whether that be disappearance, suicide, or something else. It isn’t until the crew of women, led by Portman, begin to discover odd things about the vegetation and wildlife that the mystery starts to unfurl. Here’s your first look at the film, which hits theaters in February 2018.
