The horror film genre was upended the better part of two decades ago with the release of Saw, a film that would forever change the way you think about playing games or using hacksaws. The Saw saga is getting a fresh take for the ninth installment in the franchise–the upcoming Spiral: From the Book of Saw–that was written by and stars the one and only Chris Rock. Rock plays detective “Zeke” banks who is investigating murders that are “eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past”–which means plenty of violence, dead bodies, creepy dolls and red painted spirals–alongside his rookie partner Max Minghella and seasoned police veteran Samuel L. Jackson. If the trailer you see here is any indication the film retains the grittiness and terror that made the original Saw one of the best horror films while still being a completely new take on the source material. Spiral: From the Book of Saw is scheduled for a May 15th release in the U.S.
