About as much as anyone can, Christopher Guest has perfected the mockumentary style. This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show, his HBO series, Family Tree, and now his Netflix original, Mascots, follow the format Guest is best known for. The trailer for Guest’s latest introduces a few of the mascots and we have to say, they’re all lame, but then, that’s probably what they’re going for. There’s the husband and wife team (Zach Woods and Sarah Baker), the all-star dancer (Parker Posey), and the bad boy (Chris O’Dowd). It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s genuine enough that the material doesn’t undercut itself. It’s a difficult line to walk, but Guest’s done it so well before that we feel confident saying Mascots is going to be a worthy entry in his filmography.
