Kurt Cobain might have been the harbinger of death for hair metal, but he also did quite a few really awesome things. He made plaid cool again. He sang and strummed in a way that made all of us neurotic teenagers feel normal. He let Dave Grohl play drums. He married Courtney Love. Ok, he had his faults too. Musically though, he knew which way was up, so he played Fender guitars. Unlike just about everyone else, he chose a Fender Mustang over a Stratocaster or Telecaster. The story of the Fender Mustang’s rise from the unassuming to the extraordinary parallels Cobain’s, so Fender released a custom Mustang just for Kurt. This guitar is decked out with a single-coil Mustang neck pickup, Seymour Duncan JB humbucking bridge pickup and a bunch of other stuff we don’t understand, but sounds cool. The only tragedy is that we’ll never be able to hear Cobain play it.
