We’ve all had a love/hate relationship at one point or another with Mark Zuckerberg’s social sharing brainchild, but their most recently announced piece of tech is downright awesome. Facebook Surround 360 is a high-quality, production-ready 3D-360 hardware and software video capture system that will export 4K, 6K and 8K video for each eye. Using 17 globally synced cameras (14 wide angle cameras on the ring, one fisheye camera on the top and two fisheyes on the bottom) and the custom stitching code (to remove almost all manual post-processing), you’ll be able to make 360° panoramas and video perfect for sharing (on Facebook, duh) or for a VR headset. Best of all, Facebook plans to freely release the open-source hardware and software specs on GitHub this summer.
