We live in a country that takes their leisure sports very seriously which is why soccer never really caught on here – too much running. Pool, darts, baseball, poker, bowling – all fantastic games that involve (among other things) gambling and drinking. They’ve also been romanticized for people everywhere through films. Pool got Rounders. Poker got Poolhall Junkies. It doesn’t even matter that those are backwards because they were the same movie with a different game and only one had John Malkovich. Movies that make you wish you were better and played more. Now bowling has Sean Dunne’s The Bowler, a short documentary about Rocky Salemmo.
For our money, anything described as a “documentary about booze, broads, and bowling” deserves an award. Especially if it’s as good as The Bowler.
